Bringing Black joy into the classroom

Jayna Brown - The College of Education and Human Service Professions
This short article by Jayna Brown, a fellow student teacher at the University of Minnesota Duluth, recounts her work disrupting the traditional Black history narrative. Too often, Black history is taught through a focus on trauma. Instead, Jayna's lessons purposefully taught the history and culture of Black joy, art, and celebration. Jayna is a model for student teachers acting as agents of change within their host classrooms and for their students.

Sensory Room and Processing Resources

Angi & Humber Sensory Processing Hub
Sensory issues and needs vary widely among adults and children. I still work through visual, auditory, and vestibular sensory issues on a daily basis. That’s why tools, resources, ideas, and shared experiences can be so valuable to help cope with hyper and hyposensitivity.

The article, "How to Create the Perfect Sensory Room for Your Child" provides ideas and strategies for building a safe space where children can regulate and process sensory dysfunction. Some ideas include sensory-friendly toys, auditory and light installations, and adapted seating. Sensory rooms are beneficial for all children who experience sensory dysregulation and dysfunction as well as autistic children or children with ADHD.

A resource from the Humber Sensory Processing Hub lists several helpful resource guides to support caregivers and educators caring for young children with diverse sensory needs. This hub is geared towards young children with resources focused on specific routines --including dressing, bathing, and bedtime-- as well as specific sensory systems, including proprioceptive (internal body awareness) and vestibular (balance and spatial orientation). Check out these resources by clicking the links below!

Last May, I created this resource as part of my capstone research project on preschool teachers' anti-racist pedagogy. Kayleen Jones --a UMD ALAB faculty member and the UMD Education and Human Services librarian-- adapted this resource for the library's website by adding links to book list resources. These recommendations are valuable to educators, teacher candidates, caregivers and families, and any education enthusiast!

"Emotional Health vs. Mental Health: The Real Difference"

Teachers, students, education professionals, or anyone else in a human service profession must be aware of their mental and emotional health. To care and provide care for others, we must first take care of ourselves. This self-awareness and reflection involves recognizing the differences between emotional and mental health, the value of healthy mental function, symptoms of healthy and unhealthy emotional wellbeing, and ways to care for your emotional and mental health.

In their article hosted on the Eddins Counseling Group website, Clara Jennison provides helpful resources and information for human service professionals, students, and the public to navigate their mental and emotional health.  Click the button below to read the full article.
